Augmented maritime data and flexible APIS

As you likely already know, AIS data can be messy. From unreliable vessel data to crowded ports that cause signal loss, there are many reasons why AIS can be hard to make use of.

That’s why Spire cleans and augments our AIS data in various ways, including:

  • Emphasizing the most reliable sources of AIS data
  • Reducing the noise and unreliable signals that often affect AIS data
  • Augmenting AIS data with fleet/vessel data sets (IMO, call sign, name, tonnage, etc.)
  • Separating AIS data streams that originate from ports and other high-traffic areas (i.e., decollisioning)

Spire was launched in 2012 and already we have more satellites in place than our maritime data competitors. In fact, even outside the maritime industry, we have one of the largest satellite constellations in the world.

And unlike our competitors, we build and own our satellites. This is very important to us: the ability to upgrade the hardware (we’re currently on third-generation satellites and working on fourth-generation) and the ability to quickly send software updates to those satellites. More ground stations and smarter satellites give us the agility to constantly improve all aspects of our services, especially latency.

Continuous research, development, and improvement

Spire is at its core a science and technology company. We are pioneering entirely new technologies that are already changing the way maritime data is collected and analyzed. Some examples of our groundbreaking R&D:

  • Predictive machine-learning algorithms that aid in forecasting ship locations, estimating ETAs, and improving shipping routes. This is unique, first-in-market technology and is constantly improving.
  • Decollisioning. The use of our own dedicated satellites allows us to start separating jumbled AIS signals in high-traffic areas directly from space, improving speed and allowing for more real-time analysis.
  • Weather forecasting with GPS radio occultation (GPS-RO) data: still in its infancy, but widely seen as being the future of weather prediction science. Our weather data APIs augment our AIS data. We are also aiding the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration with their research.
